What is the difference between a Psychologist and other mental health professionals?
Clinical Psychologist:
Licensed Clinical Psychologists conduct psychotherapy and provide psychological testing for their clients. While Psychologists do not prescribe medication, they work closely and collaboratively with psychiatrists when they feel their clients could benefit from medication. Psychologists received a Doctorate level education and hold degrees of Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). Psychologists are licensed and governed through State boards and regulations. In the state of California psychologists are regulated by the California Board of Psychology.
Psychiatrist:
Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MD) who have been trained in the area of mental health disorders. Psychiatrists prescribe medications to help treat various mental health disorders. Psychiatrists are licensed and governed through State boards and regulations. While there are some psychiatrists who provide psychotherapy for a select number of clients, many psychiatrists focus on medication management with their clients. Psychiatrists are regulated by the Medical Board of California.
Marriage and Family Therapist:
Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT) perform counseling and psychotherapy with their specialty being relational psychotherapy. Marriage and Family Therapists received a Masters level education. Marriage and Family Therapists are licensed and governed through State boards and regulations. In the state of California Marriage and Family Therapists are regulated by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
Life Coach:
Life coaches motivate and inspire their clients to achieve personal or professional transformation, goals and success. Life coaches can become certified as a life coach after only a few days' training, depending upon the certification or schooling chosen. Life coaches do not require any specific length of education or degree. Life coaches are not licensed or governed through state boards or regulations.
